5 PLANTS THAT ARE PERFECT FOR BEGINNER PLANT PARENTS
As I share more about my obsession with plants I’ve naturally gotten more questions from you guys about which plants are easy to start with. Before I had plants my one and only fear is that, if I had any, I’d kill them. The truth is some plants are a little more high maintenance than others. For those of you that would love to start being plant parents but want to get your toes wet before diving into plant world, here are 5 plants that are SUPER easy to take care of.
Biggest learning when it comes to all plants: Better to underwater than overwater. Overwatering is harder to heal than under watering.
ZAMIOCULCAS — ZZ PLANT
This plant is so easy to care for and thrives even in low light conditions. We have one in our entrance where it can get a bit of light from the bedroom and office windows and it has grown so much in the last month! We water this guy once every couple of weeks.
Where: Low light to bright light is good but NO direct light.
Water: Let top soil dry. Better to underwater than over water.
SANSEVIERIA — SNAKE PLANT — MOTHER IN LAW’S TONGUE
We have a couple of snake plants and honestly they are the most forgiving plants! They can be happy with a bit of sunlight or low light and we water them every couple of weeks.
Where: Tolerate low light to bright indirect light.
Water: Water when the first couple of inches are dry
ALOE PLANT
Aloe plants are pretty low maintenance plants but they are also awesome to have around as emergency burn relief. You can cut one of their leaves and spread the aloe all over your burn. However, as a plant parent I must warn you that you’ll become quite attached to your plant babies and therefore never cut anything off the aloe plant as it’ll feel like you’re cutting off one of your babies arms. Just saying!
Light: This guy can get direct light
Water: Every 2-3 weeks, maybe less during the winter.
POTHOS PLANT — MONEY PLANT
We have a couple of these amazing plants and I have to say they are so easy to care for. We put one in our wall unit that’s starting to vine down and the other is a bit more bushy and sits on the kitchen island.
Where: Bright indirect light. NO direct light for this guy or his leaves might burn.
Water: We typically water these guys every week.
MONSTERAS
Monsteras are probably one of my favourite plants which probably explains why we have 3. We gives these guys a bit of sunlight but mostly bright indirect light and water them every week. You might wonder why my Monstera is in a vase. All 3 of them are like that and thats due to bugs on their leaves. It was NOT fun to try and get them all off. It took a lot of scrubbing and thanks to the ladies at @figfleurs (which is where we get the bulk of our plants) they told me I could take them out of their pot and put them in a vase with water.
Where: Thrives in bright light but tolerates low light. Avoid direct sun as it might burn the leaves.
Water: Our monsteras live in water so we make sure to keep the water level just below the thick green stalks. If your monstera is in soil water once a week or when top soil is dry.
